7×7

THE 7×7 PAVILION

How to create a real dialogue between the artworks and the audience? How can we ask the viewer to experience the work on several levels?

This exchange of experience will have a chance to evolve in the 7×7 Pavilion.

The central circle will hold an installation comprised of objects, drawings and items belonging to each of the contributing artists, giving visitors to 7×7 the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the themes and narrative of the project.

From there, seven hallways will lead to seven rooms which hold each of the sound sculptures – each a secluded space so that the viewer can have an intimate relationship with the work.

Nile Rodgers writes about 7×7 Indigo

Just yesterday, at the  studio Nile and Jean Pierre were finalizing the letter F together in preparation for the CHIC concert to be held tonight at the Ancienne Belgique; it will be preceded by the presentation of the sound sculpture to the public. About this moving moment Nile has published , a nice text on his blog, Walking on Planet C : “… We Posed in Front Of The sculpture today. It was amazing to see and hear it completed.

FREAK OUT !

Nile Rodgers, Mr Hit Machine, plays live with CHIC on Monday June 13th at 8PM.

But that’s not all! Nile and Jean Pierre Muller have created together a fantastic artwork that you will discover in sneak preview that same evening: an interactive sound sculpture, combining Jean Pierre’s art with an amazing exclusive music by Nile…

We won’t say more, except that this artwork is part of a larger project called 7×7, in which Jean Pierre Muller has worked with 7 of the world’s greatest music geniuses. Besides Nile, there is Archie Shepp, Robert Wyatt, Sean O’Hagan, Terry Riley, Mulatu and Kassin.

As a prelude to the concert, you are invited from 6.30pm for a reception at the AB Club where the work will be unveiled. Nile and Jean Pierre will be present.

AB: 110 boulevard Anspach, 1000 Bruxelles

Tickets for the concert (access for AB Club is free between 6 and 7pm):

Nile Rodgers? ‘Le Freak’, of course! But Chic is sooooo many more immortal disco hits: ‘Good Times’, ‘I Want Your Love’, ‘My Forbidden Lover’, ‘Dance Dance Dance’… Add to that the hits of Sister Sledge: ‘We Are Family’, ‘Lost In Music’, ‘The Greatest Dancer’… Diana Ross’ ‘Coming Out’, ‘Upside Down’ and Sheila’s ‘Spacer’: it’s CHIC too….
Many have called Nile the world’s most successful producer of the XXth Century: ‘Let’s Dance’ by David Bowie, ‘Like A Virgin’ by Madonna, ‘The Reflex’ by Duran Duran or ‘Original Sin’ by INXS. It’s impossible to name everyone here, but the list of his productions include hits for the B-52′s, Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton, Grace Jones, Eric Clapton, Cheb Mami….

An evening with Archie Shepp

Meeting the great Archie Shepp, last month at Jean-Pierre’s studio in Brussels, was one of those rare moments when you know that magic is a part of our lives. The world “privilege” was particularly appropriate.

Thanks to all of you to have shared those vibrations, thank you to the fabulous Johnny Hoste who, at more than 80-year of age, has played the piano for Archie with amazing ease and talent.

Here are two extracts of Archie’s concert (merci à Annick):

Here is the photo album of the evening (merci à Frédérique, Katia et Paolo):

The G story 2

Dear Terry,

So here they are, the first pictures of our G-Sahasrara. This was really a labour of love, and I guess you can feel it even though pictures never do justice to painting. But the details can already give you a hint of the textures and vibrations. We are talking of a silk-screen-print on MDF compressed wood painted violet, in an edition of seven + two artists’ proofs (one for you, one for me), with about 14 layers of colour (done in three parts, the work being larger than silk-screen frames, so it’s 42 frames. Each frame is washed after printing – with some variations on paper –  and is used for a new colour. This means the work can never be reproduced).

Jean Pierre

Dear Jean Pierre

Thank you for this series of mails with the wonderful photos of the work in progress…it is amazing to see the work taking place on it and I come to appreciate what a monumental task it is to make each of these unique masterpieces. Thanks for sharing that…

The G Story 1

Dear Jean Pierre

I have begun some work on your project in a special non western tuning.  How important to you is the actual G placement in terms of A  40-444 standard?  I think my G in the non western tuning is closer to a western F#  but that is where this music I am working on sounds best.  When i tried to transpose it there was a loss in character. My G in this tuning is derived from a 5/4 relationship to B which is the actual fundamental tone of the system I am using.  I am using a very unusual scale I designed which I call “the dream” tuning which does not use all 12 notes but in some cases there are two different versions of some of the tones. Anyway since my work will represent the  realm of the 7th Chakra,  this tuning best serves the mystery and non definitive nature of reality.

And sometimes oh baby

Ain’t got nowhere to go

But one of these days

Gonna rise up strong

And I’m goin’ to sing

My freedom song

7×7 :: An installation of 7 works of art by one painter and 7 musicians

This year, Jean Pierre will be working on a new project called 7×7.

The concept

7x7

  • 7 notes of the scale
  • 7 colours in a rainbow
  • 7 days in a week
  • 7 wonders of the world
  • 7 samurais
  • 7 ages in a life
  • 7 virtues & 7 sins
  • 7 dwarves for snow white

An installation of 7 works of art by one painter and 7 musicians.

Each work takes the shape of one letter corresponding to a note (A to G) and has a dominant colour corresponding to one of the colours of the rainbow. All seven paintings « play » concurrently, their volume raised and lowered in response to an electronic device, developed by Greg Bertrand, which is integrated in each work allowing for the music to emerge from the picture as the viewer approaches the art work (speakers are hidden in the structure). The sound increases and decreases in response to the viewer’s proximity.

The Musicians

Jean Pierre has approached musicians whose work he profoundly admires. All these musicians have a very strong popular appeal, but have developed their audience without sacrificing their interest in creative and experimental work. As this project is an experimental one, Jean Pierre is calling on an exploratory creativity.

Confirmed participants

Archie Shepp, Coltrane’s disciple and ever daring experimentalist, from his free jazz days and funky politic statements to his recent collaboration with Moroccan gnawa musicians.

Nile Rodgers, not only is one of the world’s most revered producers, but also the inventor of a unique guitar sound.

Sean O’Hagan, leader of the High Llamas and member of Stereolab, producer and arranger for a.o. the Super Furry Animals, the Kaiser Chiefs, Brian Wilson.

Kassin, one of the most exciting names in Brazilian music. He has produced records by singers like Marisa Monte and Bebel Gilberto and has played bass for Caetano Veloso’s live shows and masterminded the Orquestra Imperial project.

Robert Wyatt, former member of the Soft Machine, he is England’s most beautiful voice and one of its most revered musicians
